Paul Hannaby is a self taught wood turner based in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire and is a member of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB).
He produces a wide range of items from functional items such as pens, salad or fruit bowls, platters etc. to the purely decorative, including vases, goblets, natural edge and burr bowls.
His main focus is on individual one off pieces.
Many different species of wood are used include Apple, Ash, Beech, Cherry, Elm, Holly, Oak, Sycamore, Yew, Willow, Walnut and Wellingtonia. Much of the material used is sourced as either complete trees or wind blown or trimmed branches which would be unusable for other purposes due to their size or location. Use of such timber limits the impact on the environment by avoiding waste.
The oil and wax finishes used are intended to protect and enhance the wood without removing the ability to touch and feel what is always a very tactile and natural material. Wherever practical, environmentally friendly natural finishes are used.
In addition to producing a wide variety of turned wood, Paul also demonstrates woodturning and is available for talks and individual tuition. Commissions are also undertaken.
