Woollen and felted textiles

Jo McCulloch – The Felted Sheep Company

About me
I have always been a knitter having been taught at a very early age but my Great Aunt.  My Mum spent many years knitting for the whole family and even when her hands became arthritic she continued on a machine, sending loads of jumpers and toys to Africa for underprivileged children. When Mum died, I decided it was time to take up the needles again.  I discovered felting handbags and then developed a pattern for hats and scarves.

About the wool
I use mainly British breed wool especially from Jacob, Herdwick & North Ronaldsay. Because each bag is individually made, I have been able to buy small batches of wool and this contributes to the unique nature of the bag. I am also keen to support the preservation of traditional British breeds, and this can only be done by buying and using the wool. It has been really interesting finding about new wools and how they react to the felting process. Also by buying wools that have been spun and dyed by different suppliers, I have been able to find some super variations in my designs.

About the products
I have developed a range of handbags and hats using this wool. My products are all hand knitted and then felted to give durable and fashionable accessories. The texture of wool is, of course, unique. My bags are a delight to touch and hold. In the same way wool is versatile and I hope my bags are versatile too, depending on the design, from everyday use to the fun and funky designs and yet there are designs that would also work well with an elegant gown. And of course there are the colours. I am only limited by the imagination of the dyers! Obviously black is such a strong staple colour, ideal for formal occasions and stands up well to everyday wear and tear. But almost any colour is available so your bag can stand out from the crowd!
I now make a large range of hand knitted and felted hats, handbags and accessories, including appliqued cushions and doorstops. All made from 100% wool.
