Genevieve Belgard

The majority of my work starts as an abstract before becoming part of a story.
It is created by dropping inks and acrylic onto wet paper. A dry sheet is placed on top then pulled apart to reveal a swirl of colour and pattern. Into this I ‘cloud-gaze’, using black pen or brush to draw & paint the images that I see. Characters and landscapes, animals and vessels are layered together to produce the finished work. Some might wait for months or years for the right assemblage of colours and images to become a completed collage. I love the use of words and turn of phrase to complement some images. There is some printing thrown into the collaged mix too. Collograph and drypoint etchings are current favourites!

I’m influenced by legend and imagination, local flora and fauna, as well as historical books and Medieval manuscripts. Originals from the Cathedral Libraries of Hereford, Gloucester & Worcester have been referenced.
I love the assured simplicity of line and quirk of character this reveals.
